A braaibroodjie is the sandwich toasted on the grid at the end of a South African braai: white bread buttered on the outside, filled with cheese, sliced tomato and onion, often a smear of chutney, and pressed in a hinged grid over cooling coals until golden and melting. It is eaten with the meat or after it, and it is the part of the braai that children and vegetarians look forward to most. In a jaffle iron it becomes a camping breakfast.
