Origin of Merveilles
It has a European origin, with an irresistible taste that makes adults and kids keep craving more. The pastry’s original name is Fasnachtschuechli in German; It’s known as “Fritelle di Carnavale” in Italian, which roughly translates to “Carnival fries”.
To characterize this unique dessert, French speakers took the name of a carnival pastry from France: Merveilles, which translates to “wonders” in English.
This snack has pretty much become a national Winter tea-time delicacy, with different brands, in different countries. During the months of January and February, it is also available at almost all bakeries.

Ingredients
- 200 g all purpose flour
- 40 g butter
- 2 eggs
- 50 g sugar powder
- 30 cl oil
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- icing sugar
Instructions
- Make a fountain with flour and yeast. Pour in the center the powdered sugar, the eggs, the nutmeg and the melted butter. Knead by hand to obtain a homogeneous paste.
- Form a ball with the dough and Spread each slice finely on a floured work surface and cut.
- Heat the oil in a large pan and put the pieces of batter. Drain the ear cups on paper towels, place them on a dish, sprinkle with icing sugar and serve.
