    What Are Sardines?

Sardines (also known as pilchards) are nutrient-dense, small oily fish that is commonly consumed by humans and used as forage fish by larger fish, seabirds, and marine mammals.
They were historically common around the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, and the term sardine was first used in English in the early 15th century.
Sardines are fished commercially for a number of purposes, including bait, immediate consumption, canning, drying, salting, smoking, and reduction into fish meal or fish oil.
They are mostly consumed by humans, while fish meal is used as animal feed, and sardine oil is used in the production of paint, varnish, and linoleum.
